The secluded studio was presented to students as an opportunity to practice site-specific planning and design. Students spent the project’s early weeks developing their own sites, each derived from a single photograph assigned by their professors. They were then asked to architecturally frame the perspective given by these photos and engage with the landscape implied by the image.

This sculptor’s studio rests on the precipice of an abandoned quarry. Surrounded by neglected slabs of marble, the building pays respect to this displacement by removing itself from the edge of the quarry and suspending itself over the void it leaves behind.
The central studio space sits at the intersection of solid and void in plan, while the ambulatory gallery extends from the embedded, crack-like stairs through the studio and down to the sunken quarry’s edge.
